17 Aggregate Stability and Size

چکیده
An aggregate is a group of primary particles that cohere to each other more strongly than to other surrounding soil particles. Most adjacent particles adhere to some degree. Therefore, disintegration of the soil mass into aggregates requires imposition of a disrupting force. Stability of aggregates is a function of whether the cohesive forces between particles withstand the applied disruptive force. When comparing size distribution or stability of soil aggregates, it is necessary that the disruptive force(s) be standardized. If the measurements are to have practical significance, forces causing disintegration should be related to forces expected in the field. The better methods to determine aggregate-size distribution have evolved as a result of efforts to standardize the disruptive forces and make them comparable to those in field phenomena. Forces involved in aggregate size and stability studies include (i) impact and shearing forces administered while taking and preparing the samples, (ii) abrasive and impact forces during sieving, and/or (iii) forces involved in the entry of water into the aggregate. These forces are generally related to cultivation, erosion (wind and water), and wetting of soils, respectively. However, the disintegrating forces occurring during sample taking, preparation, and analysis do not duplicate the field phenomena. Consequently, the relationship between aggregate-size distribution obtained in the laboratory and that existing in the field is somewhat empirical. Recognizing the empiricism involved in relating aggregate-

متن کاملStudy of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity Variations in Different Aggregate Size Distributions in an Agricultural Soil
Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) is one of the most important soil physical characteristics that plays a major role in the soil hydrological behaviour. It is mainly affected by the soil structure characteristics. Aggregate size distribution is a measure of soil structure formation that can affect Ks. In this study, variations of Ks were investigated in various aggregate size distributions ...

Free and uncontrolled pasture grazing by animals may decrease soil aggregate stability through reductions in plant cover and subsequent soil organic C, and trampling. This could expose the soil surface layer to degradation and erosion. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of pasture management (free grazing, controlled grazing and long-term non-grazing regimes) on aggregat...

Soil aggregate stability is considered as a key indicator of soil quality and health assessments in rangelands. Many factors and properties such as soil texture, organic carbon, calcium carbonate, sodium adsorption ratio, and electrical conductivity might affect soil aggregate stability. The effects of these factors on aggregate stability of 71 soil samples collected from 4 rangeland sites (2 i...
متن کاملEffect of soil structure breakdown on splash erosion in different soil textures
This study was carried out to investigate the role of soil structure in splash erosion in semi-arid soils. Splash erosion was measured in four soil textures (silty clay loam, sandy clay loam, silt loam and sandy loam) with two soil structure conditions (with natural structure and under aggregate breakdown) using a simulated rainfall with 50 mmh-1 in intensity for 30 min in splash caps with 10-c...
